“This was the first shoot on my first trip to America. It was a mind-blowing time – lad from a council estate gets flown to America to photograph amazing music at its inception! There was nothing more thrilling for me at the time. I thought hip-hop would be successful, it felt like a breath of fresh air for the music scene, but I had no idea how big it would become. We spent one night in Chicago to cover the show, then travelled to New York for the NME cover shoot in Manhattan. I think they viewed us as these weird white boys from England who’d come to write about hip-hop at a time when the music wasn’t really recognised at home.” Lawrence Watson
Lawrence first travelled to the United States in March 1985 to shoot the early stars of hip-hop for NME. It was the first of over ten trips he would make in the next two years, documenting the artists who took hip-hop from block parties to the Billboard charts.
Lawrence Watson’s portraits of music royalty have visually defined our favourite musicians for decades. For Print Matters, Lawrence shares an exclusive collection of signed, limited edition prints of his globally renowned work.
